Overview

Almost a decade since “Zero Trust” emerged as an approach to network security, the buzz around it is stronger than it has ever been. Zero Trust rejects the outdated idea that everything inside the internal network is safe, while everything outside it is unsafe.

The recent rise of Zero Trust suggests the time has come to completely rethink how we define trust in considering how to secure critical data and resources. But why is Zero Trust in particular gaining traction now? And is it really the best way to ensure effective security today? To answer these questions, join this session with Dave Taku

Robert Martin – Sr. Security Engineer, Cisco Systems Inc.

Robert Martin is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional with over thirteen years of experience in information security. He holds a Master of Science in Network Technology with a concentration in Information Security. He also holds a Cyber Security Masters Certification. He is a Sr. Security Engineer for Cisco Systems, Inc. in RTP, NC. Robert specializes in areas such as risk management, regulatory compliance, security solutions architecture, security audits, vulnerability assessments, and penetration testing. From 2012-2015, Robert served as President of the Raleigh Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association. During that time, the chapter membership grew at a rate of 125%. Currently, Robert serves on the Raleigh ISSA Board as the Sponsorships Director. Robert is committed to serving the community through outreach by expanding the chapter’s mission to students and military. He has held several other IT Security Advisory Board positions over the years with a focus to bring about awareness of information security threats in an ever-changing global IT Security economy.

Ben Smith – Field Chief Technology Officer, NetWitness, an RSA business

Ben Smith (@Ben_Smith) is Field Chief Technology Officer with NetWitness, an RSA business. He brings more than 25 years’ experience in the information security, risk management, networking and telecommunications industries; his prior employers include UUNET, CSC, and the US Government, along with several technology startups. Smith holds industry certifications in information security (CCISO, CISSP), risk management (CRISC), and privacy (CIPT); he is an acknowledged contributor to NIST SP 1800-1, -3, and -7; and he serves as an appointed member of the Cybersecurity Canon Committee. He is a patent holder, a published contributor of four of the “97 Things Every Information Security Professional Should Know” [O’Reilly, 2021] and previously served as a corporate representative to the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE). Smith has presented internationally at cybersecurity events sponsored by Gartner, FS-ISAC, SANS, IANS, CERT/SEI, RSA Conference, ISSA, (ISC)2, ISACA, Infosecurity, BSides, ASIS, InfraGard, HTCIA, SecureWorld, ISMG, SC Media, SIRA, RMA, IIA, MWCA, ICI and other organizations.
